OLIVER KOSSACK
Check yourself before you wreck yourself

Oliver Kossack
[ sic ] humor
1967 geboren in Tel Aviv, lebt und arbeitet in Leipzig
1967 born in Tel Aviv, lives and works in Leipzig

Haltungen – vom abstrakten Expressionismus, Minimalismus, Bad Painting

It is difficult to pin Oliver Kossack down in a specific artistic category: For he consciously pursues an eclectic approach that allows him to move freely between different styles and strategies – from Ab Ex, Minimalism to Bad Painting and a punk trash-aesthetic. Analysing icons of modernism and post-modernism, Kossack's paintings, drawings and installations quote, comment and combine aspects of works by reputed artists and artistic discourses. Yet, his quotes are not straightforward and often, bizarre titles point towards new levels of idiosyncratic meaning. Kossack addresses expectations posited toward him as an artist, and the constitution of the artist's role within the art business, a world determined by different interest groups and ultimately by the market. Combining emotion and rhetoric, Kossack assumes the stance of a critical, ironic observer, although he is fully aware that he too is just part of the system.
Ilina Koralova, Curator/Museum of Contemporary Art Leipzig

Knight Rider, a shadowy flight into the dangerous world of a man who does not exist. Knight Rider, a young loner on a crusade to champion the cause of the innocent and the helpless in a world of criminals who operate above the law. One for all and all for one, musketeers are always ready. One for all and all for one, helping everybody. One for all and all for one, it's a pretty story. Sharing everything with fun, that's the way to be. One for all and all for one, musketeers are always ready. One for all and all for one, helping everybody. One for all and all for one, can sound pretty corny. If you've got a problem chum, think how it could be. Children of the sun, see your time has just begun, searching for your ways, through adventures every day. Every day and night, with the condor in flight, with all your friends in tow, you search for the Cities of Gold. Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah... wishing for The Cities of Gold. Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah... some day we will find The Cities of Gold. Do-do-do-do ah-ah-ah, do-do-do-do, Cities of Gold. Do-do-do-do, Cities of Gold. Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah... some day we will find The Cities of Gold. There's a voice that keeps on calling me. Down the road, that's where I'll always be. Every stop I make, I make a new friend. Can't stay for long, just turn around and I'm gone again. Maybe tomorrow, I'll want to settle down. Until tomorrow, I'll just keep moving on.

Mut, you snickering, floppy-eared hound. When courage is needed, you're never around. Those medals you wear on your moth-eaten chest should be there for bungling, at which you are best. So, stop that pigeon, stop that pigeon, stop that pigeon, stop that pigeon, stop that pigeon, stop that pigeon, stop that pigeon. Howwww? Nab him, jab him, tab him, grab him, stop that pigeon now!
Ulysses, Ulysses - Soaring through all the galaxies. In search of Earth, flying in to the night.

Ulysses, Ulysses - Fighting evil and tyranny, with all his power, and with all of his might. Ulysses - no-one else can do the things you do. Ulysses - like a bolt of thunder from the blue. Ulysses - always fighting all the evil forces bringing peace and justice to all.
Just the good ol' boys, never meanin' no harm. Beats all you've ever saw, been in trouble with the law since the day they was born. Straight'nin' the curve, flat'nin' the hills. Someday the mountain might get 'em, but the law never will. Makin' their way, the only way they know how, that's just a little bit more than the law will allow. Just good ol' boys, wouldn't change if they could, fightin' the system like a true modern day Robin Hood.

We cordially invite you and your friends to our upcoming exhibition

CECELIA CONDIT

Works 1983 - 2008

Since the early 1980s, Cecelia Condit has garnered acclaim for her sweetly gruesome stories of menaced and menacing women. Described as "feminist fairy tales," her videos set Brothers Grimm-like parables in the suburban landscape of the American Midwest, mixing black humor, lush photography, and eerily sing-song soundtracks to unearth the dark fantasies lurking there.

Hendrik Zimmer vereinigt in der Ausstellung mit dem Titel "... take back what we have never owned" dogmatische Bild-Positionen des 20./21.

Press preview: Friday, May 8, 5 – 7 PM
Opening reception: Friday, May 8, 7 – 9 PM

The International Studio & Curatorial Program proudly presents the exhibition Financial District, organized by Miguel Amado, curator-in-residence in 2009. Financial District brings together resident artists at ISCP as well New York-based and international artists whose works allegorically respond to, comment on, and conjecture about the relationship between the contemporary global economic climate and the US cultural landscape. Featuring media as diverse as painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, video, and performance, as well as artists' writings, books, and talks, this exhibition provides an exclusive peek into the output of some of the most significant socially-conscious, critically-engaged practitioners of today.

The Financial District marks the urban scenery of all major American cities. However, more than an architectural trait or geographical location, the Financial District stands for an ideology, that of the "new spirit of capitalism," which has developed over the past few decades and which has been recently questioned in the wake of the financial crisis that emerged last year. Therefore, although affecting all sectors, the existing situation's consequences expand beyond the field of economy, for example changing production capacities and consumption patterns. This condition is thus altering everyday life in the manner classical sociologists have predicted when they called attention to the process of alienation in capitalist societies.

Financial District addresses these topics in various ways. On view are depictions of street scenes in Brooklyn and American territories; iconographies of the real estate boom and crash; renderings of newspapers' statistical data and collections of New Yorker's fears; and representations of America in film, press, or personal diaries. Other works examine the connection between money and time, systems of value, and labor trends. Quotes of Karl Marx, reflections on the market, accounts of material exchange, allusions to gold, comments on Nasdaq and visions of experimental factories evoke theoretical traditions and individual experiences of capital. This exhibition sheds light on the current state of affairs in the world economy and US culture, speculating how both are sides of the same coin.

2nd Athens Biennale 2009

HEAVEN

15 June – 4 October
Preview: 13 & 14 June

The 2nd Athens Biennale 2009 Heaven is designed as a multi-faceted contemporary art event, comprising of several exhibitions, actions, music and theatre performances, film screenings, symposia, etc, with the participation of more than 100 international artists.

Artistic directors XYZ (Xenia Kalpaktsoglou, Poka-Yio, Augustine Zenakos), who curated the 1st Athens Biennale 2007 Destroy Athens, have invited an eclectic group of curators to contemplate the subject of Heaven. Heaven as a wide topic touches upon notions such as lost innocence, nature and ecology, utopias and ideal communities. From this premise, a creative dialogue begins, which will reflect upon the theme itself as well as the methodology surrounding large-scale periodical exhibitions. The diverse approaches of the 2nd Athens Biennale 2009 team of curators will retain their autonomy, while interconnecting creatively and claiming a narrative cohesion which will be further reflected in the exhibition design, by architect and artist Andreas Angelidakis.

The multiple visual art and performative interventions in the public spaces will be curated by Dimitris Papaioannou and Zafos Xagoraris. Exhibitions, installations, public interventions, screening programmes, and symposia, will be curated by Nadja Argyropoulou, Diana Baldon, Christopher Marinos, Chus Martínez, and Cay Sophie Rabinowitz.

Shane Munro - Useless Pyramides

Wendi proudly presents its 8th Exhibition
6th of May - 15th of June 2009

Shane Munro
Useless Pyramides

Inspired by the visionary world of Keynesian Economic strategy, the artist tests the notion (in rigorous creative fashion) that constructing useless pyramids can play an important role in saving economies from total collapse. This artistic multiple which maintains faith in the useless pyramid model as a blanket savior for faltering economies provides stimulation and employment where it existed before, not to mention joy and satisfaction for creator and client, in short total socio-economic-emotional alchemy.
We are pleased to inform you that these objects of wonder, abject fragments of a tortured psyche are available for you to buy at a nominal fee.
Highly decorated but without an unnecessary mark on them, these derivitively collectible tombs of petit morts supervised in a factory of melodrama flirt with memory, dressed up like meaningful water-colorless tattoos.
One can see upon close inspection that adorned within the surface are hysterical flourishes, existential groupings and the definite traces of some wonderfully confused artistic paradigm, but all the same grounded and rigorously framed by a highly pragmatic use of GCSE economic theory. SEEMINGLY VALUE FROM NOWHERE HERE!!

Gregor Maria Schubert & Ralf Barthelmes:
empty space
