The Automatic Theatre is a temporary collective of artists, who have jointly developed a one off evening of performance at .HBC.

The Automatic Theatre is a temporary collective of artists, who have jointly developed a one off evening of performance at .HBC.
The performance will be a collage of single contributions as well as collaborations between the participating artists. All parts will be structured to a continuation of scenes. They will remain autonomous in content and style, such as narration, costumes, stage design and music. Together they will tell a fragmented story, readable only in retrospect.
The concept for the show was inspired by strategies such as "L'écriture automatique" (DADA / Surrealism), which aim at replacing fictive storytelling by following immediate ideas. It is believed to achieve high authenticity, with the side effect of high absurdity.
The Automatic Theatre – A Performance is the second collective performance of it's kind. It follows Fever of Unknown Origin. An incorrigible Opera, staged at Basso Berlin in July 2009. Both projects were initiatives of the artist Lisa Jugert.

Das Automatische Theater ist ein temporäres Kollektiv, das über den Zeitraum eines Monats gemeinsam eine Performance für die einmalige Aufführung am 5. Juni 2010 im .HBC erarbeitet.
Die Performance ist eine Collage aus Beiträgen der einzelnen Künstler und entwickelter Zusammenarbeit, die abschließend zu einem gemeinsamen Handlungsablauf strukturiert werden. Die Beiträge sind thematisch unabhängig voneinander und fokussieren zu unterschiedlichen Gewichten auf Handlung, Kostüm, Bühnenbild und Musik. Zusammen erzählen sie eine fragmentarische Geschichte, die erst nach der Aufführung lesbar wird.
Inspiriert wurde dieses Konzept von Strategien wie "L'écriture automatique" (DADA / Surrealismus), mit denen fiktive Erzählweisen durch unmittelbare Einfälle ersetzt werden sollten. Ziel dabei war eine möglichst hohe Authentizität, zugleich aber auch faktisch eine hohe Absurdität.
Das Automatische Theater - Eine Performance ist die zweite von Lisa Jugert initiierte kollektive Performance. Sie folgt als Weiterentwicklung auf die Performance Fever of Unknown Origin. An incorrigible Opera, aufgeführt im Juli 2009 im Basso Berlin.

In the context of the "Sidewalk Deli" exhibition, the subproject "Apocalypse Now" addresses aesthetic narratives on global warming. Explicitly critical strategies examining causes and functional parameters are presented by Anna Meyer, whose drawing focuses ideology-critical attention on the responsibility of art itself, and by Olaf Nicolai with a pot-plant "buried" in a plastic bag and by Christine Würmell with her aggressive political collages, which call, among other things, for "All cars to Antarctica." The narrative of appeal is to be found in the work of Rirkrit Tiravanija, who has formulated the slogan "Less oil, more courage" on a T-shirt. Douglas Gordon fosters poetic awareness by renaming the ship on which the exhibition is taking place, as does Almut Linde, who draws attention to river pollution through unaccustomed beauty. The possibility of alternative practices is demonstrated by Heide Degert's model of a tornado power station, and Bernhard Prinz with his documentation of a bio-powerstation located close by the ship. Tue Greenfort's photographic work shows an Italian "energy-saving taxi." Finally, Björn Melhus brings the narrative of forecast into play by showing the 2099 water level in Venice in artistic form in a computer animation.

Die Bildung einer „Marke" spielt in der Kunst eine ebenso bedeutsame Rolle, wie in anderen Märkten. Erfolgreich verkaufte Kunst kommt von Künstlern, die wie eine Marke funktionieren und einen unverwechselbaren Wiedererkennungswert haben. Dieser kann in den Werken des Künstlers liegen oder in dessen Person.
Jeder Künstler, der ökonomischen Erfolg genießt, hat eine bestimmte und für ihn spezifische Formensprache, Materialverwendung oder ein charakteristisches Farbmuster. Die Werke lassen sich dem Künstler zuordnen. Je genauer das Werk sich vom Rest der Kunstwelt und der Arbeiten anderer Künstler abhebt, je wahrscheinlicher ist, dass die Werke und der Künstler sich als Marke durchsetzen. Schafft ein Künstler etwas Neues, etwas noch nicht Dagewesenes und davon ein fundamentales Œuvre, so dass ein Markt damit versorgt werden kann, dann steigt damit die Chance auf Anerkennung und Erfolg, das Geschaffene als Produkt zu vermarkten.
Vorrangig für den Preis scheint die Sicht der Betrachtung auf das Werk und den Künstler zu sein, die durch einen im Kunstsystem erschaffenen Mythos beeinflussbar ist. Die Bedeutung des Künstlers wird anhand seines Lebenslaufes und den Geschichten, die sich um ihn ranken, bemessen. „Denn auf der Geldwaage des Kunstmarkes wird nur der vergötterte Künstler unbezahlbar." Das Publikum und dessen Sicht auf die Arbeit des Künstlers ist beeinflussbar.
FLORIAN HEINKE, geboren 1981 in Frankfurt am Main/ Deutschland, arbeitet und lebt in Frankfurt am Main. Er hat Malerei bei Prof. Friedemann Hahn in Mainz studiert und 2009 sein Studium an der Städelschule als Meisterschüler der Klasse Malerei bei Prof. Christa Näher beendet.
Heinke hat mit zahlreichen Ausstellungen abseits der eingespielten Institutionen immer wieder für Aufsehen gesorgt. Ort, Titel und weitere Faktoren, wie z.B. Dauer oder Bewerbung der Präsentationen, sind hierbei stets genau kalkuliert. Nur so kann Heinke die für ihn wesentlichen Fragen beantworten: Wie bringt man die Kunst zu den Menschen und wie kann Kunst im heutigen Marktgefüge authentisch sein?
Kalkuliert sind die aus der Vielzahl der Aktionen entstehenden Gegensätze.
2008 bespielt Heinke den Frankfurter Kunstverein Lola Montez mit 70 fast ausschließlich großformatigen Arbeiten und hinterlässt den Eindruck einer musealen Retrospektive. Andrerseits schenkt er den Bürgern seiner Heimatstadt Frankfurt im selben Jahr mit Unterstützung von Daniel Birnbaum einen Stolperstein der Liebe. Quasi unsichtbar in das bestehende Pflaster eingelassen. Mitten vor dem weltberühmten Römer, dennoch fernab jeglicher Wahrnehmung. Seine Arbeitsphase BLACK POP der Jahre 2007 bis 2010 wird am 19. August 2010 im Tower der Frankfurter Commerzbank präsentiert. Die hierfür eigens erstellten Arbeiten in übergroßen Formaten und das Erscheinen des Buches LOVE KILLS bilden den Abschluss dieses Werkzyklus. Er nutzt die wirtschaftlichen Gefüge unserer Zeit und sich selbst konsequent. Für seine Kunst. So werden bei Heinke Nicht-Kunsträume zu Ausstellungsflächen und die hoch gehandelte Ware Kunst wird zu Versteigerungen für wohltätige Zwecke preisgegeben. Schlussendlich wird der Künstler selbst zur Marke. Kurz gesagt: Fast überall wo Heinke drin ist, steht auch Heinke drauf.
In Zusammenarbeit mit FLORIAN HEINKE haben die Studenten der Fotografieklasse Sandra Mann der AVA Academy of Visual Arts/Frankfurter Akademie unterschiedlichste Konzepte erarbeitet in denen sich der Umgang mit dem Künstler als Marke widerspiegelt.
Am 26.07.2010 werden die Fotografie-Studenten die Ergebnisse ihrer Auseinandersetzung mit Heinke als Mensch, Künstler und Marke in Mainz präsentieren.

TV signals or custom made videos are altered with analogue mixers, reacting to the music set and the setting of the event. Video is not used as a decoration but as a three dimensional light source, altering the actual space. Dani Gal, 1975 geboren in Israel, studierte in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Frankfurt am Main und in New York. In seinem Werk setzt sich der Künstler intensiv mit der medialen Geschichtskonstruktion der Nachkriegszeit auseinander. Sein Zugang ist der Sound, der sich in seiner einzigartigen Plattensammlung von Politikerreden, „Terrorschulungen“ oder Gewerkschaftskämpfen dokumentiert findet. Nicht nur im Samplen und neu Abmischen dieses Materials, sondern auch im dokumentarischen Ansatz seiner Videoinstallationen, lässt er den Betrachter teilhaben an den manchmal zufälligen, oft verblüffend wiederkehrenden oder auch vollkommen improvisierten Momenten medialer Geschichtsschreibung.
Dani Gal gehört zu den Preisträgern des Dorothea von Stetten Preises in Bonn, des Villa Romana Kunstpreises in Florenz sowie des Ars Viva Preises’ 09/10.
Im Kunstraum des Hafen 2 in Offenbach am Main stellt Dani Gal ab dem 21. Mai 2010 seine Videodokumentation mit dem Titel „Black Magic Marker“ (27.40 min.) vor, die im Vorjahr über den jamaikanischen Musikproduzenten Lee „Scratch“ Perry in der Schweiz entstanden ist. Parallel zum Video werden Archivfotos des inzwischen legendären Musikproduzenten im Ausstellungsraum interim.projekte zu sehen sein.

The exhibition takes as a starting point the bankruptcy and subsequent aftermath of the DeLorean car factory, which operated in Dunmurry, outside Belfast, in the early 1980s.
The company's founder, John DeLorean, was arrested in October 1982 for alleged possession of $16 million dollars of cocaine at Los Angeles airport. This, coupled with technical flaws during car production and poor sales in the United States all contributed to bankruptcy and closure of the factory after less than two years of operation. Despite such obstacles, the DMC-12 car was considered valuable for its unusual design incorporating gull wing doors and a stainless steel body, and later became a popular icon of the 1980s, functioning as a time machine in the movie Back To The Future.
Läpple, a German company with a factory in Carlow, Ireland, produced the tooling to stamp out the body of the car, essentially the formgivers that gave DeLorean its famous profile. These large cast iron sections were sold off and dispersed to scrapyards in 1984, and it was rumoured that they was purchased by fishermen to be used as anchors. Eventually, Lynch located their remains in an inlet off the Atlantic Ocean in 2009. A photograph at the Other Space details the scene at 18 metres below the water, on the seabed at 53.29938N & 9.76344W. There, an ecosystem has grown around, over and under the metal. Seaweed forms a kind of patina over its surface while several species of crabs (Cancer pagurus, Liocarcinus puber, Carcinus maenas) now reside in various casting cavities and hollow spaces of the tooling. Occasional shapes appear that seem somewhat similar to the shape of the car, but now with crustaceans appearing as the passengers.
Documentation and a sculpture detailing ongoing work by Lynch to produce sections of a DMC-12 by handmade rather than industrial means also features.
Sean Lynch (born 1978, Kerry) lives and works in Berlin and Dublin. He attended the Stadelschule between 2005-7. Solo exhibitions include the Gallery of Photography, Dublin, Heaven's Full, London and Limerick City Gallery of Art. His work currently features in Lost and Found, a group exhibition at neugierriemschneider, Berlin, through to May 29. He is also author, editor and publisher of several books and pamphlets that focus on Irish art and architecture, and is represented by the Kevin Kavanagh Gallery in Dublin.
This exhibition receives support from Culture Ireland.

Für den Museumsplatz entwickelt der junge Künstler Jorma Foth (geb. 1983) eine Installation, die sich mit Stadt auseinandersetzt. Die Stadt wird von ihm als ein Platz begriffen, den man sich aneignen muss und der durch drei zentrale Ereignisräume geprägt ist. Vor Ort entstehen eine Stadtmauer, die zu beginn überwunden werden muss. Es folgen zwei »Spiel-stätten«: Ein runder Platz, in dem zwei lebensgroße »umschlag-aufsteh Puppen« zum ringen einladen und eine, an ein römisches Amphitheater angelehnte Architektur, in dem ausgesuchte Texte und Requisiten zum bespielen bereitliegen. Aus Pappen, Kartons, Klebestreifen, Schnüren, Tüten und anderen recycelten Materialien werden Häuser, Alleen, kurzum die verbindenden städtischen Elemente gebaut. So können auch die großen und kleinen Besucher des Museums mitwirken und eigene Ideen zu Architektur und Stadtplanung entwickeln. Jorma Foth bezieht sich hier auf den französischen Architekten, Künstler und Theoretiker Yona Friedmann (geb. 1923). Architektur ist für ihn die Möglichkeit, den Lebensraum individuell zu gestalten, dabei sind Improvisation, soziales Miteinander und Kreativität zentrale Aspekte. Die Eröffnung der Ausstellung am Sonntag, 30. Mai 2010, 15 Uhr laden wir Sie und Ihre Freunde herzlich ein. Freuen Sie sich auf eine Aktion von Jorma Foth. Es spricht Gabriele Sand. Im Sommer wird für eine bestimmte Zeit eine Künstlerwerkstatt mit Jorma Foth in der Ausstellung eingerichtet.

Vom 08. MAI – 18. Juli 2010 präsentiert der Bielefelder Kunstverein die ersten institutionellen Einzelausstellungen von Benedikt Hipp und Maria Loboda. Beide Künstler haben bereits durch internationale Ausstellungsbeteiligungen auf ihre Arbeiten aufmerksam gemacht.
Benedikt Hipp (*1977 in München) zeigt im Bielefelder Kunstverein neue figurative wie ungegenständliche Malereien und Papierarbeiten. Erstmals präsentiert der Künstler auch raumgreifende Skulpturen und großformatige Tafelbilder, die in ortsbezogene Szenarien eingebettet werden.
Im Zentrum der Ausstellung von Maria Loboda (*1979 in Krakau) steht das Porträt eines Raumes, der neben architektonischen Eingriffen von Wandornamenten und obskuren Objekten geprägt ist. Die Inszenierung, die auch den Innenhof des Kunstvereins einschließt, betont die psychologische Bedeutung von Räumen und Gegenständen. Die Ausstellung »New Thoughts, Old Forms« ist inspiriert von der gestalterischen Reformbewegung des beginnenden 20. Jahrhunderts. Dabei greift die Künstlerin auch die regionale Geschichte der Textilverarbeitung in Bielefeld auf.

The Bielefelder Kunstverein is pleased to announce the first, institutional solo exhibitions of Benedikt Hipp and Maria Loboda. Both artists have already drawn attention through international exhibitions of their work.
Benedikt Hipp (*1977 in Munich) is showing new figurative paintings together with abstracts and works on paper at the Bielefelder Kunstverein. For the first time, the artist is also exhibiting space-consuming sculptures and large-format tableau paintings, which are embedded in scenarios related to their locale.
Maria Loboda's exhibition has as its centre the portrait of a room styled by wall-ornaments and obscure objects alongside architectural alterations. This staging, which also includes the inner courtyard of the Society of Arts, stresses the psychological meaning of spaces and objects. The exhibition, »New thoughts, old forms«, is inspired by the early 20th century creative reform movement. And with it, Loboda (*1979 in Krakow) also takes up the regional significance of textile-production in Bielefeld.

1857 is proud to announce our first exhibition, Like Eskimo Space, featuring Falke Pisano, Haegue Yang and Timothy Furey.

The exhibition marks the opening of 1857, and comes after months of refurbishing and preparations. The show takes place both in the storefront gallery and the former lumberyard behind the house. Like Eskimo Space brings together the work of three artists.
● ● ● In the video Chillida (Forms & Feelings)(2006) Falke Pisano examines her affective relation to a series of David Finn's photographs of sculptures by Eduardo Chillida, a Basque sculptor. Going through the pages of a photo-book, she traces the relationship between the characteristics of specific objects, their depiction, the experiences of the photographer and his daughter, as well as her own preoccupations and emotional responses to the images.

Haegue Yang's Series of Vulnerable Arrangements – Version Utrecht (2006) consists of disparate objects ranging from household appliances to industrial items; lamps, electric heaters, scent dispensers and a humidifier, all connected to timers and motion sensors. The apparatuses click on and off, seemingly at their own accord, and form a group of oddly animated individuals acting upon their surroundings by means of light, heat, scent, wind and fog. The interplay of these objects, strung out among wires and a common power supply, stages sensory connections with the visitors, highlighting the indeterminacy and precariousness of any shared relation.

The Savage Innocents (2010) by Timothy Furey covers the gallery windows facing Tøyenbekken. Stenciled on a copy of the New York Times, the work highlights the cusp of the opening of 1857, while simultaneously blocking out the view from the outside. Taking it's title from Nicholas Ray's 1960 film starring Anthony Quinn, The Savage Innocents also references a story about the loss of self in a man faced with modern culture.

As an opening exhibition, Like Eskimo Space describes the scope of potential for 1857, suggesting both latitude and a setting that will define the space.

Pisano, Yang and Furey each investigate individually defined notions of the collective, whether on the level of the sensory, the abstract or the represented. The construction of relations, propositions and displacements generates an instability variously smoothing out and dividing up the realm of signs and that of communication.
About the artists:
The work of Falke Pisano (b. 1978, Amsterdam) analyzes the structure embedded in the abstractions of linguistic objects (or of objects through language). Integral to her practice are elements such as using language as an object or as a possibility to construct one, the flexibility of concrete material in language and the relationship of the structure of language to its performativity. Pisano's works often take the form of lecture-performances in which the artist explores topics such as abstraction, the practice of theory, and linguistics.
Falke Pisano has exhibited extensively in galleries and institutions throughout Europe and the United States, including Making Worlds, 53rd Venice Biennale,Modernologies, Macba, Barcelona, Balice Hertling, Paris, Kunsthalle Basel, Switzerland, Manifesta 7, Trentino, Italy, Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, Berlin Biennale 5 and MuHKA Museum voor Hedendaagse Kunst Antwerpen.

Haegue Yang (b. 1971, Seoul) constructs complex and nuanced installations that collapse the space between the concrete and the fleeting, working with materials such as customized venetian blinds and sensory devices including lights, infrared heaters, scent emitters, and fans. Yang's works explore the real and metaphorical relationships between her material surroundings and emotional responses, attempting to give form and meaning to experiences that exist outside conventional order.
Haegue Yang represented the Republic of Korea in the 53rd Venice Biennale, 2009. Recent solo exhibitions include Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, USA; Cubitt, London; Dépendance, Brussels; BAK, Utrecht and Portikus, Frankfurt. She also participated in the 2006 Sao Paulo Biennial (2006); the 55th Carnegie International, Pittsburgh (2008); and the 2008 Turin Triennale. Timothy Furey (b. 1981, Ireland) has exhibited in Ireland and abroad, as both member of the artist group Villa-K. and as an individual practitioner. He was co-founder and editor of the publication Karnival (2005 – 2008). In previous works, Furey has been considering the lack or loss of the subjective, working through the figure of the muse in early 20th century art, and in particular that of Maude Gonne.
Timothy Furey is a student at Städelschule, Frankfurt, and is currently furthering his studies at Cooper Union, New York.
The exhibition is supported by Norske billedkunstneres vederlagsfond.

- is an artist-run gallery occupying a former lumberyard in Grønland, downtown Oslo.
Established in 2010 by Steffen Håndlykken and Stian Eide Kluge, 1857 aims to establish connections between the Norwegian art scene and young artists abroad. It is a place to convene and converge, receive, answer and honour contemporary art in Oslo.
