Nacht und Nebel (Night and Fog) I 2011 I HD video film I 22 minutes

Fifty years ago on April 11, 1961, the trial of Adolf Eichmann began. He was tried in an Israeli court and charged for committing crimes against humanity and war crimes and was convicted and executed by hanging on May 31, 1962.

On a night, between the 31st of May and the 1st of June1962 shortly after the execution and the cremation of the body, a group of police officers sailed on a boat 6 miles out of the shores of Jaffa port. Their mission was to scatter Eichmann’s ashes into the international waters of the Mediterranean Sea. The purpose of the highly secret mission was to ensure that there could be no future memorial and that no nation would serve as his final resting place.

Based on an interview Dani Gal made with Michael Goldman, a Holocaust survivor who was one of the policemen on the boat, the film re-enacts the scene of the group of policemen sailing on a dark foggy night with Eichmann’s ashes in a jug of milk.

The weather had turned so much worse that the rest of the day was certainly lost. The wind had risen and the storm gathered force; they gave from time to time a thump at the firm windows and dashed even against those protected by the verandah their vicious splotches of rain. Beyond the lawn, beyond the cliff, the great wet brush of the sky dipped deep into the sea. But the lawn, already vivid with the touch of May, showed a violence of watered green; the budding shrubs and trees repeated the note as they tossed their thick masses, and the cold troubled light, filling the pretty saloon, marked the spring afternoon as sufficiently young.

Those seated there in silence could pursue without difficulty – as well as, clearly, without interruption – their respective tasks; a confidence expressed, when the noise of the wind allowed it to be heard, by the sharp scratch of a pen at the table, busy with letters.

The visitors, settled onto a small set of stairs that, with a palm-tree, a screen, a stool, a lamp, a stand, a bowl of flowers and three photographs in silver frames, had been arranged near the light wood-fire as a choice "corner" – the guests turned audibly, though at intervals neither brief nor regular, the leaves of books covered in lemon-coloured paper and not yet despoiled of a certain fresh crispness. The effect of these volumes, for the eye, would have made them, as presumably the newest French novels – and evidently, from the attitude of the readers, "good" – consort happily with the special tone of the room, a consistent air of selection and suppression, one of the finer aesthetic evolutions. If the writer was fond of ancient French furniture and distinctly difficult about it, her inmates could be fond – with whatever critical cocks of charming dark-braided heads over slender sloping shoulders – of modern French authors. Nothing bad passed for half an hour – nothing at least, to be exact, but that each of the companions occasionally and covertly intermitted their pursuits in such a manner as to ascertain the degree of absorption of the other without turning round. What their silence was charged with therefore was not only a sense of the weather, but a sense, so to speak, of its own nature.

Henry James, "The Story of It", with small insertions by Esperanza Rosales

'Unpredictable Signs of Revolt'

The work presented at Lampione (Elbestrasse #20) is inspired in a flag originated during a Brazilian revolt in 1817, known as the Pernanbucan Revolt: one of the first known organized attempts to create a (micro) state, to gain freedom from the former colonial oppressions. The symbols in the original flag represented, in metaphorical ways: the energy and strength of the region (the sun), the union of all local citizens (rainbow), as also the sense of belonging of the new free state when participating in what would be the (future) Brazilian federation (the star), and so on...

However, this new flag re-articulates some of the older elements in ways that 'dislocate an idea, a revolutionary imaginary and its symbols', asking what would be to introduce anew such aesthetic constructs in a different contemporary urban zone, one marked by so many contemporary social phenomena and movements. With this new image, the attempt is to think how the abstract and symbolic communication of a flag, and the reading of its basic elements, could be understood in such a new  urban context. In this direction we can ask: which are the impacts of this image in urban, public and cognitive realms? Which connections we are able to establish, and how the collision between the ideas, texts and symbols in the flag manage to articulate an imagery related to the idea of revolt? These are some questions triggered by the dislocation and re-articulation of the flag elements, seen at same time as a public and ideological element of communication as also an identitarian element carrier of many histories and meanings.

Garage 30, is an exhibition space "for just one night", having been active for five years, from 2000 to 2005, in Frankfurt. Each exhibition can only be seen for the duration of the paint, and involves considerable amounts of energy in its creation and installation. The artists invited to exhibit their work contributed by exchanging one of their works for one already in the collection. The photographic material showing these events can be seen on the website catalogue www.garage30.org

Megan Francis Sullivan I Dirty Mirrors I 2011 I Exhibition view

Underlying structures of visual representation form a central theme in the work of Sullivan especially in her recent focus on images of men. Doing so, the artist applies various medias and styles in the tension of formalism and desire. In the exhibition „Slow“ (2009) at Freymond-Guth, the artist presented a series of gouache paintings, based on Kylie Minogue‘s videoclip of the same name. In the video, men in swimsuits pose around the singer from an aerial view. Sullivan staged a photoshoot and made a series of paintings based on the images, arranged in formalistic manner inspired by color studies of Sophie Taueber-Arp and Ellsworth Kelly, anonymizing the objects of study.

In the exhibition „Dirty Mirrors,” the artist presents a series of works - paintings, transfer on canvas and sculptures - that continue to explore didactics of form and repetition,
this time focusing on the German gay magazine „Boys, Kerle, Männer.” This magazine was first published in 1972, shortly after homosexuality in Germany became legalized following the reform of „Act 175.”

For the transfers for instance, Sullivan uses photocopied images from the magazines applied onto canvases with painted interventions. The images show naked men staged in masculine connoted poses and attributes: on horseback, with a football, in front of a library. But scenery and pose as well as the technical simplicity of these images reveal
a moment of shy orientation, where a visual self-conception mirrors classical and historical prototypes that are imitated and reenacted.

Megan Francis Sullivan I Creation 2011 I Photocopy transfer and gouache on canvas I 70 x 50 cm

Sullivan adopts a supposed role of difference to approach codes and rhetorics of a specific subcultural environment of the early 1970s. But through the fact of this conceptual detour Sullivan establishes a relation of a subjective investigation of the base of artistic (re-) production and mimesis on one hand with the conditions of appropriations of cultural codes on the other. The publishing of „Boys, Kerle, Männer“ can be located in the transition point in a process of visuality, from repressed subculture to becoming an established cultural „norm“ associated with homoerotics as part of every day life.

In the process of incorporating these images into artwork, the motives are abstracted through accentuation of details, additional coloring or geometrical playfulness. Formal- abstract elements can be understood as an attitude between analysis and fascination. Much more it can also be read as a metaphor for processes of formalization of cultural conventions. Sullivan‘s method of displaying and quoting seems to reflect how socio-political categories- that are factually unstable because they are subject to historic transformations- are dependent on such acts of repetitions of cultural staging to
be recognized as an imaginary ideal. Cultural discourses only become „materialized“ through constant mimesis and the mirroring of inscriptions.

Megan Francis Sullivan I Untitled (Study for Frames) I 2011 I Gouache on paper I Dimensions 35 x 28,5 cm

The sculptures that formally resemble frames can be thus understood to reflect an idea of formalization processes. The repetition, stacking and layering of plain, color and sculptural body not only show proximity to methods of concentration and visual juxtaposition but also irritation and obstruction of the view. But it is precisely in this skilled maneuver with the control of approaches; repetition, mirroring, blurring and dissolving of categories that reveal an oblique potentiality.

H00dumentary - Ilja Karilampi
Ilja Karilampi (1983, Zweden)
is multimediakunstenaar.
