"I met Richard in 2004 on a crazy tour in Australia (Oren Ambarchi's last "What is Music?"). He was a founding member of The Sun City Girls but he came out to play solo. Instantly we were entranced by his playing, so many beautiful elements of why I love guitar come through in his music and presence, without floating around in genre space at all. Here on the road with Kevin Drum, Dead C, Residents, Gang Gang Dance, Black Dice, etc… amongst this insane lineup Richard ended up supporting Pan Sonic and really held it down, as a soloist. A few years later Peter Rehberg and I (as KTL) were invited to join a tour Richard was doing with EARTH. His incredible communication of atmosphere and texture was even more fluid than I remembered… a real pleasure. If the reason to start a record label is to release the music you are truly enamored by, this is a true example of that philosophy." —Stephen O'Malley, Paris 2012

Sir Richard Bishop is an improviser, composer, and an intrepid explorer on electric and acoustic guitar whose work often reflects the shadow worlds of India, the Middle East, North Africa, and other points along the Gypsy trail. There is also a fair amount of experimentation involved in much of his string-work which can lead to audio realms rarely visited by others. Attentive listeners may hear shades of Jimmy Page, Django Reinhardt, Sonny Sharrock, and Ali Akbar Khan in his playing.

He is perhaps best known as a founding member (along with brother Alan Bishop) of experimental ethnic-improv pioneers and underground tricksters Sun City Girls, who for nearly 30 years have produced an extensive discography of over 50 full length albums, 20 one-hour cassettes and a dozen 7² records. Sun City Girls formed in 1981 after the Bishop brothers' stint in the group Paris 1942 which also featured J. Akkari and former Velvet Underground drummer Moe Tucker.

Richard has put out music on his own on such labels as John Fahey¹s Revenant (his debut Salvador Kali), Locust Music, Drag City, Southern Records, and ever since 2005 began performing relentlessly as a solo artist, playing throughout Europe, Australia, and the United States. He has not stopped since.

In May of 2010, Drag City released the album False Flag by Rangda, a new group featuring Bishop, Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance, Comets on Fire), and Chris Corsano (Flower-Corsano Duo, Flaherty/Corsano, Jandek, Bjork, etc).

Richard was also a co-founder of the Sublime Frequencies label (with Alan Bishop and Hisham Mayet). The label, whose mission is dedicated to acquiring and releasing obscure sights and sounds from Africa, India, S.E. Asia and beyond, began in 2003 and currently has over 65 releases to its credit.

The mechanics of style and the appropriation of mythos are activated through the codes and references associated with space, place and personal economies. Myth is produced through the cult of the image, the convoluted knowledges that support it, then worn like a back patch of crisp hieroglyphics. We adorn the voyeur, gazing through lenses at the public displays: flesh transacting like currencies, a necklace like a curse, a weave like a tapestry, all being reduced and rectified as material.

Personal style options become diffused and confused with the placards stretched like Guernica's over public squares, barring martyrs of bronzed ivory, broken into coat racks. Looking amongst tattered blue jeans, distressed like a painting, one finds their own interpretation of an individual cosmology, and decoupages references like a poem. Taking up tropes to reexamine their value, standing objectively, leafing through the excess, we become trapped in the spin cycle, looking to rectify them within our own constellation. AT

The images and styles we seek end up like archetypes sedimenting in our personas, fragments from a place we can only visit. Estranged from their privileged status as deity-beings, they integrate with our lives - briefly. We feel the influence of bronze goddesses upon us, towering over our dreams, leaving us always searching for ever stronger spells to access these unfulfilled desires and image-memories.

Trapping us in a loop of golden hoops and infinite silver chains, throwing pink kisses on pale lips, corridors studded in crystal, while we dip in white powder, to refresh our skin, to look crisp and always sunkissed, so we get closer to what we dream. CR

Ausstellungseröffnung am Freitag, 27. April 2012, 19 – 23 Uhr
Ausstellungsdauer: 27. April – 10. Juni 2012

Neal Rock (* 1976 in Wales)

Philipp Haager (* 1974 in Stuttgart)
In geheimnisvolles Dunkel getauchte Bildräume, nahezu endlose Blicktiefe, mystisch anmutende Atmosphären.

The Sentient Manifold

A Sci-Phi Omnibus
By Jol Thomson
Chapter 1 The Sentient Manifold
The Embrace - HD Video (8 minutes)
Ecstatic Love – Audio Book narrated by a 9D cube (34 minutes) (edition of 20)
Sculpture:
NARRATOR – Aluminum, Fresnel Lens.
CATALYSIS - Aluminum, Fresnel Lens, Fluorescent Light, Mirror, Electrical Wire and Circuitry.
{All works 2012}
/
An ecstatic romance between a mountain forest and a pair of telescopes is reported from the expanded perspective of a 9-Dimensional cube: NARRATOR.  CATALYSIS, in turn, observes and reports between higher-dimensions and 4D space-time.
\
The beginning of the 3rd Millenium:
Physical sciences are fast in pursuit of the Pandora's Box of consciousness.  Quantum Mechanical developments of the 20th century burst these doors open with the measurement problem, decoherence, the uncertainty principle and the suggested 'collapse of the wave function'.  World renowned cosmologist Roger Penrose - in collaboration with Anesthesiologist Stuart Hameroff - has developed an equation that situates proto-cognition in the very fabric of space-time cosmology: E=h/t
Consciousness is a Force of Nature on par with electro-magnetism, gravity and the strong and weak nuclear forces. It is not merely an epi-phenomenon but inherent, causal, multi-dimensional and spontaneous.
Under such considerations, human ontology and epistemology are undergoing substantial paradigm shifts that we have yet to fully comprehend. Can we then remain so unapologetically bio-biased and anthropocentric when it comes to the question of what is sentient/ cognizant/ conscious?
Consciousness occurs everywhere all the time. Should we not be expanding our conceptions of experience, communication and living?  In doing so, will we not have firmer ground upon which to extend Rights to Nature herself – on par with human rights? Can we develop Crimes Against Nature with real repercussions for those responsible? Should we continue to tolerate Ecocide? ... And should we continue to tolerate being dominated by authoritarian conceptions of Love?

bureau is not tied to any fixed location.
bureau temporarily occupies spaces with fixed opening hours.
bureau exists in the mind and can be retrieved of course in parts.

ALERT studio is an independent project initiated by Raluca Demetrescu Alina Buga and Catalin Burcea in order to create a platform of research and promotion of contemporary artistic production. Taking on the function of alaboratory space, Studio Alert proposes a meeting between artists, ideas, directions and speeches from different areas of conceptual and cultural spaces. Critical thinking and interrogation are important and valued as research methods in the contemporary cultural and artistic field.
ALERT studio stands as a gallery project, connecting three areas of artistic exploration - PINK | RED | WHITE - into one space. But these coordinates do not mean indexing, labeling and restriction. They may intersect, combine in new shades, and may always communicate and trigger debates.

Concert by Musique Brute

Marco von Orelli (Trumpet), Co Streiff (Alto & Soprano Sax), Natalia Sidler (Piano, Analog Synthesizer & Ondes Martenot), Jan Schlegel (E-Bass), Sheldon Suter (Drums).

We don’t orient ourselves to typical song-schemas, or to exchanges among soloists characteristic of free improvisation. Outside of the palette of New Music and Jazz dynamics, we create our own movement. A clear form of consciousness and a space for intuitive instant composing are the building blocks for our dramaturgical-aural constructions.
