Dec. 4, 2012 - Jan. 15, 2013

Opening reception: Tue. Dec. 4, 6-9pm
Art Basel VIP tour: Fri. Dec. 7, 9-12pm
Open hours during Miami Art Week: Wed. - Sun. 12 - 6pm
Weird Miami bus tour: Sat. Dec. 8, times to be announced.

The Bas Fisher Invitational (BFI) has moved to the Downtown ArtHouse, a new space in Downtown Miami, and is pleased to announce the opening of new Weird Miami programming with the exhibition Shell-Reflexive and a bus tour led by art space Spring Break.

Inspired by Miami's relationship to Art Basel Miami Beach, the yearly art event that transforms the city into an international arena of art and commerce, Shell-Reflexive operates on a principle of self-reflexivity seeking to inhabit the mechanisms that convert meaning into monetary value in the cycle of art.

Phase One:

Art's meaning – in all of its forms and discords – is the categorical phenomenon that continues to set the art object apart from the mere object. Against an information-driven, production-ready global landscape, we begin to see that the contemporary art object has developed a special mechanism to support and distribute meaning: an invisible shell. Institutional and monetary agreements, critical discourses and narratives, and social relationships manifest the shell of meaning that slowly and caringly brings the work of art into visibility.
Inspired by the objects that usually lie just outside the exhibition space – museum merchandise – the artists in Shell-Reflexive will reflect on the nature of these objects as material carriers of meaning, and present their own versions and mutations of "art merchandise." Visitors will encounter something that skirts the line between exhibition and store, where art "works" have been replaced by "merchandise," which can be purchased for non-art prices.

Phase Two:

Shell-Reflexive can be understood as a mechanism that evaluates the current status of art in relation to its shell. By turning the exhibition inwards – dissolving the order of visibility that says artwork first, mediation second – Shell-Reflexive seeks to inhabit art's shell as a site of value-creation. The economy created by the merchandise sold will be collectively invested in the stock market by the artists and curator, which, depending on the success of the investment, could serve to finance a future exhibition. A gesture meant to highlight that art is never innocent, especially today, when meaning is a hybrid shell that hovers outside of art itself.

With an architectural contribution by Norwegian artists Audar Kantun and Joar Nedberg. Shell-Reflexive's visual identity is defined by Bjørnar Pedersen and Viveka Forsman in collaboration with the curator. Special thanks to T293 and Kraupa-Tuskany for their support of this project.

--

Expanding upon Shell-Reflexive, the art space Spring Break will host a Weird Miami bus tour on Dec. 8, taking participants to undisclosed destinations throughout the city of Miami. The locations will situate Shell-Reflexive against its local context, revealing a city that is beyond the scope of Art Basel Miami Beach.

--

Shell-Reflexive is curated by Agatha Wara, a south Florida native, who in 2008 co-initiated the BFI's Weird Miami project. After completing her studies at the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, Wara relocated to Norway to work on the triennial Bergen Assembly, where she is presently a research and curatorial associate.

All new BFI programming is part of Weird Miami. Through exhibition, events, and bus tours, Weird Miami offers publics a behind-the-scenes look at the city of Miami and its artistic and cultural offerings. BFI invites artists to create bus tours that reflect on one's relationship with the city, exploring South Florida as a site for cultural and artistic production. Upcoming exhibitions and Weird Miami bus tours in 2013 will be presented by Tyson Reeder, and Ana Mendez.

Weird Miami programming is funded through the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation's Knight Arts Challenge, which aims to bring Miami together through the arts.

And whoever observes the work upon […] their best […] purcellans, will find their beauty is all of this kind (that is) without order. (1690:58)

Though it is not quite a softcore pornographic film, this sex drama never quite manages to tell a story.

"Porcelain" - "Purring Porcelaine"

I watch him from down the hallway; he is talking to his best friend, probably gossiping about the latest fashion trends. His light brown hair (that is actually really silky and soft, when it doesn't have a ton of product in it) is perfectly coiffed. Porcelaine dogs. Gold tiles. Yellow seems smooth, red is sticky, violet is taking away your buzz. Before he feeds Puppy Porcelaine, he should wash his hands. Not after. With a shaky hand he approaches the nose.

The glossy surface makes him wish his c**k were more like canned liver. Luckily his a*****e is already (…). A Porcelaine's tongue is as splendid as moonlight on water. Like it has been soaking in sweet Tea since FOREVER. Sticky&juicy, sweet & joyful. He has on a purple silk-something shirt, that clings in all the right places. Out on the field, he is an energetic, tireless and passionate hunter but at home he is docile and friendly. He is independent and brave, hunting in packs and used to working with minimal directions from his owners.

He has a keen sense of smell and a musical voice. He has no known serious health problems and can live for about 12 to 13 years. And his voice is light and airy, and yeah, it's kinda girly (but that what makes him unique) but it can be masculine too; when he sings, he has this air of confidence about him; it's almost as if he gets transported to another place when he's singing. He's strong and independent, knows exactly what he wants.

If you want to learn to love like a real boy loves you should definitely say good evening to Puppy Porcelaine ("Guten Abend, Hunde Jugend Porzellan"). Swoon Puppy Porcelaine with your best jokes (Puppy Porcelaine loves to laugh as much as He likes to force reflective surfaces up his Cave of Eden (all roads lead to (…)).

He kinda reminds me of a porcelain doll; his skin is a beautiful shade of pale (that he covers with make-up that he doesn't need) and is baby soft from his vigorous nightly moisturizing routine. He is obviously trying his best. (But as we are learning everyday "our best" is simply not "good enough"). Don't beat Puppy Porcelaine, join puppy Porcelaine. He should at least learn how to dress well. And he should try better than his best. Three spinster witches did not succeed and their (now) voluptuous asses are breaking the backs of the nation's horses.

He must have felt me staring, because he turns his head in my direction and lifts the sunglasses off his nose and arches a perfectly manicured eyebrow in my direction. I come up behind him and wrap my arms around his waist and press a kiss to his cheek. I whisper in his ear, "The hairs on your neck in lost embrace? I love the tiny veins on your back They remind me of the way That porcelain cracks." Kissing another breed is so liberating you just want to stay in the Moment of Spit. For a dog like Puppy Porcelaine every day is like Spitfull Sunday. On Sundays He eats roast.

V22

Young London Event

Peles Empire

Please join us for our final Friday late at Young London 2012, featuring Peles Empire's ARTISTS TALK(ING) AT THE BAR WITH TUICA.

Based around the notion of copying the copy, Peles Empire (Katharina Stoever and Barbara Wolff) is concerned with themes of reproduction and transformation. Borrowing the name of the late-19th-Century Romanian castle: Peles - the ongoing work is a series of recreations of its eclectic interiors in two and three-dimensional forms.
Artists talk(ing) at the bar with Tuica offers an alternative to the conventional 'Artist Talk' as a means of engaging in conversation with the artists. Katharina Stoever and Barbara Wolff will be serving cocktails made with Tuica, a traditional Romanian plum spirit, and invite us to join them around the bar at V22.

GUM studio, via Aosta 16bis, Torino

She couldn't exorcize her awkwardness and lack of conviction. She sat dappled in light occasionally staring at the sun which screamed from in between the emerald mesh of leaves. A book had told her that dappled light is the best for humans. This was later confirmed when she learned of Brion Gyson resting on a train. The dappled light flitted across his closed eyelids and induced hallucinations. She would hallucinate of triple black diamonds if only she could escape reality.
"HAHAHHAHA!" She laughed out loud.
If only I could escape reality…. She thought to herself. She knew the real problem was confrontation with reality. As a post-op mermaid nearing the end of the two years of surgeries and skin grafts from various labs in various petri shaped patches she would walk in under three years and jog in five. The specialists would fuse her long spine and then split it in half. They would snip her giant liver down to the size of a sea slug (13%) leaving her yellowed and weak. Her psychoanalyst learned just how powerful her advanced genes had made her mind but she found her "opposite of asperger's!!!!" only a burden. The only thing she wanted was to be able to ski. She would douse herself in perfume in the hopes that someone would take her for a winter hare and not a spring salmon. Some true exercise! She didn't want to be the Darryl Hanna of Splash! but the one of Blade Runner. Not a mythical being of singularity but the replicant without an original thought. She had heard a lot of pop music in her time on land and her emotions seemed predictable enough.
She was conceived in the semen filled seas of Blubber Bay where two hipsters on a Ryan McGinley photo shoot came to mate with the herring under the pink curtains of aurora borealis. She spent most of her life alone. In the early 80's she fell in with a pod of porpoises near Hornby Island but she could never hit the high notes and didn't care much for their whines anyways. She met Errol there. He loved her chelsea. She thought he was nice until she found out he didn't know what "NO" meant. After that she bummed around the Mediterranean. She made money how anyone in her position would. She took advantage of religious people. In this one village near Messina she found people throwing money into the sea. She threw a rock back.
.
Non poteva immaginare che dagli sci, allo snowboard, alla pinna sarebbe passato un anno e mezzo.
Ci troviamo a metà.
