H. ist zufrieden mit ihrer Existenz, die sie sich als Krankenschwester in einem städtischen Krankenhaus geschaffen hat. Hier hat sie die Dinge unter ihrer Kontrolle, klassische Tricks zur Sicherstellung ihrer Autorität anwendend, wie Verlangsamung von Prozeduren und Informationsverweigerung, und dabei ihrem Glauben an die Errungenschaften und Methoden moderner Medizin folgend. H.s System scheint sicher zu sein, bis eines Tages Patient D. an sie herantritt, den H. noch nicht kennt, der ihr jedoch so gespenstisch erscheint, dass H. ihn kaum verkraften kann. Es kommt zu einer metaphysischen Konfrontation, in welcher der neue Patient D. keine Technik unversucht lässt, um zu H. durchzudringen; aber auch H. ist nicht ganz unvorbereitet….

Zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts gelang es dem Berliner Mathematik Gymnasial-Lehrer, Phrenologen, Schausteller und Mystiker namens Wilhelm von Osten erfolgreich, seinem Pferd Hans einfaches Rechnen beizubringen. Das Pferd wurde schnell zur Sensation und schmückte die Titelseite der New York Times. Dies nahm ein deutsches Bildungsgremium zum Anlass, einen 13 Personen umfassenden Untersuchungsausschuss einzuberufen. Nachdem Hans' arithmetische Begabung analysiert wurde, kam die Kommission zu dem Schluss, dass die wahre Scharfsinnigkeit des Pferdes im Gebiet der Psychologie liege. Die Fähigkeit von Hans bestand vielmehr darin, die korrekte Lösung anhand der Körpersprache seines Gesprächpartners zu dekodieren als wirklich zählen zu können. Der Film ist als eine Hommage an „Hans"- das kluge Pferd - zu verstehen.

Die Eltern pfeifen das Mädchen schliesslich zur Schule, doch bummelt es durch die Strassen und geht an der Schule vorbei, ohne hinein zu gehen. Nachdem die Schule vorbei und es zurück in seinem Zimmer ist, zwitschert es ihren Eltern auf die Frage „Wie war es?" eine Antwort zu, die nur die halbe Wahrheit in sich birgt…

Die amerikanische Künstlerin Adrian Williams (geboren 1979) arbeitet mit den Medien Performance, Film, Fotografie und Text und wird in ihrem Vortrag über Aufzeichnungen, Dasein und Abwesendsein und darüber, wie Geschichten sich ändern, sprechen. Williams wird im Rahmen ihres Vortrags ebenfalls in die neue „Kerstin Cmelka"-Publikation einführen. Der Vortrag findet in englischer Sprache statt.
Zur Ausstellung Kunst und Lebensform die sich über beide Raumebenen des Künstlerhauses, der Halle für Kunst & Medien (KM–) erstreckt, erscheint der erste monografische Katalog der Künstlerin in Kooperation mit dem Kunstverein Harburger Bahnhof, der an diesem Abend präsentiert wird.

Kuratiert von Oona-Léa von Maydell
Cosima von Bonin entwirft seit 1990 die Plakate zu ihren Ausstellungen selbst. Zum ersten Mal wird hier die vollständige Plakatsammlung ihrer Einzelausstellungen gezeigt. Somit wird dieses Konvolut vollständig präsentiert und ermöglicht einen erweiterten Einblick in ihre Arbeit.
Mit der Portraitreihe von Jana Euler gewinnt die Ausstellung zusätzlich viele Gesichter: Dietrich Ceccaldi, Ruth Suckale, Wolfgang Koschmieder, Daniel Gnom, Harald Waechtler und Werner Denny heißen die Protagonisten. Ein zentrales Moment in ihrer gegenständlichen Malerei ist die Erschaffung von Identität.
Über Lucie Stahl schreibt Chris Kraus in dem Künstlerbuch Plakate Posters (Berlin, 2011): „Ich habe Lucie noch nie getroffen, aber wir leben in derselben Welt: Oellecks, Palmwedel, Schlüsselringe, Sportgetränke. So wie ich, ist sie eine selbst ernannte Reporterin. Stahls Poster beginnen mit ihrem seltsamen Hang dazu, zufällig aufgeschnappte Gesprächsfetzen, Hintergrundgedanken und flüchtige Beklemmungen aufzuschreiben."
Am Abend der Eröffnung wird Anne Imhof ein Konzert spielen. Zudem werden von ihr zwei Videoarbeiten und eine Malerei vorgestellt und eine Malerei die eine Komposition zeigt. In ihrer Arbeit lotet sie die Grenzen zwischen Tanz und Performance aus. Viel mehr versteht sie ihre Arbeit als eine konzipierte Komposition.
Die Ausstellung ist das Abschlussprojekt von Oona-Léa von Maydell im Masterstudiengang Curatorial and Critical Studies der Goethe Universität und der Städelschule Frankfurt am Main. Selbst Künstlerin und Kuratorin ist es nicht in Maydells Interesse als Ausstellungsmacherin präkonzipierte Lösungen zu formulieren, sondern mit den eingeladenen Künstlerinnen und ihren Werken den Versuch einer gemeinsamen Findung zu beschreiben.

Die skulpturalen Arbeiten der diesjährigen basis Förderatelier-Stipendiatin Sandra Havlicek setzen sich mit virulenten Fragen des Objektstatus von Kunst- und Alltagsgegenständen auseinander. Das Potenzial von Flexibilität und Bewegung statischer Objekte und deren Positionierung im Raum und als Gegenüber des Betrachters stellen dabei die zentralen inhaltlichen Themen ihrer künstlerischen Praxis dar.
Havlicek testet in ihrem Werk den Hiatus zwischen Gebrauchs- und Kunstwert aus und erzeugt ein fragiles Spannungsverhältnis, indem sie ihre Arbeiten, die nicht selten an vermeintliche Dinge des alltäglichen Lebens erinnern, in autonome künstlerische Objekte transformiert. Ihre Skulpturen befragen den sie umgebenden Raum, verschränken sich ineinander und werden in scheinbare architektonische Elemente verwandelt. Jegliche assoziierbare Funktionalität wird durch die Materialität aufgebrochen. Durch die Transformation bereits existierender Objekte und der Erweiterung älterer Arbeiten der Künstlerin wird der Prozesscharakter der Kunst Sandra Havliceks sichtbar.
Die so entstandenen Arbeiten werden durch das Element der Entfremdung neu positioniert und gleichsam wird ihre Funktion zu Raum und Betrachter neu verhandelt sowie die subjektive Wahrnehmung herausgefordert, da sich die Objekte durch ihre Beschaffenheit und Flexibilität jeglicher gewohnten Gebrauchslogik entziehen.
Sandra Havlicek (*1984 in Frankfurt am Main) studierte bei Tobias Rehberger an der Städelschule in Frankfurt (2008-2011) sowie zuvor bei Heiner Blum an der Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach (2004-2008). Die ehemalige Stipendiatin der Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes (2007-2010), Gewinnerin des EXTRACT Kunst-Preis des Kunstverein GLStrand, Kopenhagen und momentan Stipendiatin des basis Studio-Programms (2012/2013) war mit ihren Arbeiten bereits bei zahlreichen Ausstellungen vertreten (Auswahl): »eine/r aus siebzehn« Museum Wiesbaden (2012), »exTRAct« Kunstverein GLStrand (2011), »encore« MMK Zollamt (2011) und »TOO FAT TOO FIT« NKV Nassauischer Kunstverein e.V. (2010). Die Künstlerin lebt und arbeitet in Frankfurt.

After touring Europe (Madrid, Rotterdam and, again, Madrid) and Latin America (Lima, Quito, San José de Costa Rica), the most vibrant collage exhibition worldwide arrives to Berlin with ten days entirely dedicated to collage. An exhibition, workshops and artist talks will bring some of the most renowned collage artists around to a city where collage seems a natural way of expression.
The exhibition, at tête in Prenzlauer Berg is curated by Weird´s head curators Rubén B and Max-o-matic. The selection of artists unite some of Weird´s classic provocateurs with some German based collage artists who will be exhibiting for the first time with Weird. The exhibition will showcase some of Cless´ über-detailed collages; Anthony Zinonos´ intervened calendars; Rubén B., refined compositions; Max-o-matic´s controlled chaos; April Gertler´s collaged banners; Damien Tran´s nostalgic visual landscapes or Grande´s collaged imaginary cartography; Goster´s dada inspired cuts and Isabelle Cordemans´ body inventions among others.
This edition of the IWCS will be special: A series of talks and workshops are going to add some action to the show. Anthony Zinonos, Dennis Busch, Damien Tran and Rubén B. will talk about their vision of collage and about their work process; Rubén B. and Isabel Reitemeyer will host two live collage workshops open to those who want to take part in a Weird live collage session.

Florian Auers erste institutionelle Einzelausstellung in Deutschland zeigt neue für den Ort konzipierte Arbeiten.
Believe in Better verweist auf eine vielversprechende Vision zukünftiger Möglichkeiten. Dieses Versprechen, gleichsam hoffnungsvoll optimistisch und ironisch verklärt, zeigt sich in Form eines Ausstellungskonzepts welches Fragen von Identität, Konsum und Lifestyle verhandelt und ästhetische Elemente von Corporate Culture in der visuellen Kultur aufgreift. Auers Objekte und Skulpturen vereinnahmen den Ausstellungsraum und verwandeln ihn in einen buchstäblich verheißungsvollen Ort. Der Künstler greift auf Lenkungsstrategien aus Werbung und Product Placement zurück und platziert ein sich durch den Ausstellungsraum mäanderndes Display. Dieses nimmt Bezug auf Mechanismen in unserer Konsumkultur wie einer fetischisierten Warenwelt und macht Bezüge zu gängigen Präsentationsmodellen im Ausstellungskontext auf. Die Bildsprache Auers zeichnet sich durch ein Ineinandergreifen von bildhauerischen Strategien und einer post-industriellen Ästhetik aus, deren Referenzen im Alltäglichen, wie den gegenwärtigen Medien liegen.
Florian Auer (*1984 in Augsburg) hat an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste München und an der Frankfurter Städelschule studiert und lebt und arbeitet in Berlin.

In his first institutional solo exhibition in Germany, Florian Auer presents new work conceived especially for NAK.
Believe in Better alludes to a promising vision of future possibilities. This promise, optimistically and ironically romanticized, is presented in the form of an exhibition concept dealing with questions of identity, consumption and lifestyle and drawing on aesthetic elements in visual culture from corporate culture and brand identity.
Auer's objects, sculptures and site-specific interventions monopolize the exhibition space, transforming it into a literal place full of promises. The artist employs directional strategies from advertising and product placement, setting up a display that works its way through the exhibition space. This references mechanisms from consumer culture like our world of festishized goods and alludes to contemporary modes of exhibition presentation.
Characterized by an intertwining of sculptural strategies and a post-industrial aesthetic, Auer's visual language and references reside in everyday, contemporary media.
Florian Auer (born 1984 in Augsburg) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and at Städelschule in Frankfurt and lives and works in Berlin.

Lummerland is an exhibition project initiated by Rasmus Søndergaard Johannsen, Young Joo Lee and Lisa Meixner in 2010. It is inspired by their shared interest in irrational thinking and sensual perception and has grown out of an experimental research process on the theme of the island, which Michael Ende termed 'Lummerland' in his 1960's novel Jim Buttom And Luke The Engine Driver. Combining installation, performance, moving image and sculpture, it addresses the island as site for the projection of myth, utopias and dreams, and as a metaphor for art itself.

SCHWAWARMA ist die Gründung einer INSEKTE. Ihre dringlichste Aufgabe sieht sie darin, die Menschen auf ihrem transhumanen Weg in die Zukunft zu begleiten, in der nach Dekaden der Vereinzelung und Isolation das Kollektiv wieder Welten bauen kann. Sie will die erste Larve und Geburtshelferin sein.Das Publikum ist Teilnehmer einer utopischen Spielsituation, in der über den gesamten Aufführungszeitraum mittels Performance, Installation, Malerei und Videos ein fiktives Szenario gestaltet wird, in welchem sich Kunst und Leben vermischen.
Die Algorithmen des Finanzmarktes und der Google Suchfunktion benutzen digitale Pheromone. Die komplexen Strukturen des individuellen Lebens in Großstädten müssen durch dezentralisierte Prozesse verstanden werden. SCHWAWARMA möchte eine Sprache finden, welche die Geschichte und Zukunft des menschlichen Verstandes untersucht, während dieser von einem Superorganismus gespiegelt wird, um so mögliche Organisationsszenrien unserer Gesellschaft in einer Zeit, in welcher alle alternativlosen Optionen versagt zu haben scheinen, weitergehend zu erforschen.

Exile is pleased to invite you to a unique event on June 13, 2013, at the Gotthard Road Tunnel, Switzerland.
Martin Kohout will run through the Gotthard Road Tunnel, which, at a length of 16.9 km, is the third-longest road tunnel in the world, connecting the German and Italian-speaking parts of Switzerland. He will pass from one side to the other, alone and without a pause. No documentation will be taken inside the tunnel and Kohout will only be seen entering and exiting the tunnel.
The tunnel is special not only for its length but also its location, situated in an area significant to Swiss history and legends, remaining an important traffic link between Switzerland and Italy, spanning the interior mass of the eastern portion of the Lepontine Alps.
The run, as both a definite and physical action, has qualities that are measurable but its mark as a simple gesture is less distinguishable — the gesture has no time of a beginning or an end. The event takes place in a monumental yet hypnotically monotonous space otherwise devoted solely to traffic. The tunnel will be completely closed off to the public during the run and the artist, separated from any viewers, will carry out his run in private. Documentation will be possible at the exits, where the event can be considered publicly accessible.
A dedicated tour bus with a limited number of 12 seats will leave from LISTE Artfair in Basel on Thursday, June 13, and drive ticket holders through the tunnel to Airolo in the Canton of Ticino. It is from this point that Kohout will start his run through the tunnel. The party will then drive back over the mountains to the exit location at Göschenen, Canton of Uri, to await and greet Kohout once he exits the tunnel. An Apéro will be served. Subsequently, the bus will return the party to Basel. The bus can be joined by other vehicles on its way across the Gotthard Pass from Airolo to Göschenen.

Mercoledì 12 giugno, presso gli Atelier di Palazzo Carminati, l'artista Ani Schulze presenta al pubblico il proprio lavoro ed il progetto di ricerca che intende sviluppare durante il mese di giugno presso la Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa, nell'ambito del progetto di residenza itinerante A room of one's own, ideato e curato da Solalanotte, spazio espositivo gestito da un collettivo di giovani artisti con base a Francoforte.
Ani Schulze (1982, Frankberg, Germania) vive e lavora a Francoforte e a Glasgow.
Attualmente frequenta la Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste Städelschule a Francoforte sotto la supervisione di Douglas Gordon e un Master in Fine Arts presso la Glasgow School of Art a Glasgow.
L'artista utilizza diversi media, come scrittura, performance, film e installazioni di oggetti, facendo riferimenti al cinema, alla sua storia e ai meccanismi legati all'immagine in movimento.
Le sue opere riflettono su strutture architettoniche e oggetti, che appaiono spesso come luoghi abbandonati.
I suoi video affrontano e mettono in discussione le regole, le gerarchie e le strutture con le quali la società, o parti di essa, si sono confrontate nel passato.
Inoltre, Ani Schulze realizza lavori su carta, producendo collage e libri che contengono testi tratti dai suoi stessi film. In diversi progetti ha collaborato con architetti, filosofi e altri artisti.
A room of one's own è un programma di residenza della durata di un mese, a cura di Solalanotte.
Obiettivo del programma è dare l'opportunità ad uno studente della Städelschule di dedicare il tempo e lo spazio alla riflessione piuttosto che alla sola produzione artistica, in un luogo unico in Europa, quale è Venezia.

Anat Ebgi is pleased to present Wassup Painters, a group show organized by Pavan Segal featuring work by Kerstin Brätsch, Paul Cowan, Cynthia Daignault, Liam Everett, Henrik Olai Kaarstein, and Molly Zuckerman-Hartung. The show will open on June 8, and will be on view until July 20. A reception will be held at the gallery on Saturday, June 8 from 6-9pm, at 2660 La Cienega Blvd in Culver City.
Wassup Painters brings together contemporary artists who approach painting through the use of nontraditional materials and innovative processes as a way of exploring new conceptual ground. Painting as a medium has a long and rich history and recent trends have focused on exploring and reinterpreting what has come before. In some contrast to this, Wassup Painters highlights artistic practices that push the possibilities of the medium into unexpected realms, blurring the boundaries between painting and other forms of object making.
The exhibition title references Larry Clark’s 2005 film Wassup Rockers, which features a group of Latino teenagers searching for identity in the racially diverse and ever changing South Central neighborhoods of Los Angeles. In the film, the teens are often mislabeled as “rockers” due to their long hair and black clothes even though they primarily self-identify as “skaters,” making them feel misunderstood in their own community. While many of the works in Wassup Painters have leanings toward painting, they could easily be perceived or labeled as other forms entirely, such as glasswork, photography, signage, deconstructed material, collage, sculpture, and fabric art. This show offers the opportunity to view works that have direct points of intersection with these forms of object making as a way of contemplating what comprises and defines painting, while asking what role context, intention, and expectation play in this process.
Kerstin Brätsch was born in Hamburg, Germany. She received Her MFA in 2007 from Columbia University. Solo exhibitions include Gavin Brown, New York and Balice Hertling, Paris. Select exhibitions include Kölnischer Kunstverein, Cologne (with DAS INSTITUT), Kunsthalle Zurich (with DAS INSTITUT), The 54th Venice Biennial (with DAS INSTITUT), MoMA/ PS1 (with DAS INSTITUT), Sculpture Center, New Museum, New York, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (with DAS INSTITUT). She lives and works in New York.
Paul Cowan was born in Kansas City, MI. He received His MFA in 2012 from University of Illinois at Chicago. In 2012, Cowan mounted a solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. Solo exhibitions include Clifton Benevento, New York, and Shane Campbell, Chicago. Recently, his work has been included in group exhibitions at Kavi Gupta, Berlin, James Cohan Gallery, New York, and Thomas Duncan Gallery, LA. His work has been reviewed in Modern Painters, Kaleidoscope, Mousse Magazine, and Art Forum. He currently lives and works in Milwaukee.
Cynthia Daignault was born in Baltimore, Maryland. She attended Stanford University, and was a MacDowell Colony Fellow in 2010. She was invited for a solo exhibition at White Columns in 2011, which received a review in the October 2011 issue of Artforum. Solo shows include Lisa Cooley, New York and group shows at American Contemporary, New York, and Bureau, New York. Daignault is a recipient of the 2011 Rema Hort Mann Foundation Grant. She currently lives and works in New York.
Liam Everett was born in Rochester, NY. He has had solo shows at Altman Siegel, and Romer Young Gallery in San Francisco, Paul Kasmin Gallery, New York, and White Columns, New York. He has been included in group shows at 303 Gallery, New York, Canada, New York, Josh Lilley Gallery, London, and Wattis Institute, San Francisco, CA. In 2012, he received the Fellowship Award for the Artist in Residence program at Headlands Center For the Arts. He currenty lives and works in San Francisco, CA.
Henrik Olai Kaarstein was born in Oslo, Norway. He currently lives and works in Frankfurt, Germany. Solo exhibitions include T293, Rome, FIAC Paris, Holodeck, Oslo, D’Amelio Gallery, New York, and Leonhardi Kulturprojekte, Frankfurt. His work has been written about in New York times, Flash Art (Italy), and Artforum. He currently studies at Staatliche Hochschule fur Bildende Kunste Staedelschule, in Frankfurt Germany.
Molly Zuckerman-Hartung was born in Olympia, WA. In 2012, she presented her first solo museum show the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. Recently, she was invited to participate in the group show, Painter Painter at the Walker Art Center. Molly is represented by Corbett vs Dempsey, Chicago. She teaches painting and drawing at the school of the art institute, and Northwestern University, and is co-founder of Julius Cesar, an artist run exhibition space in Chicago. She currently lives and works in Chicago.
Pavan Segal, M.D. is a child and adolescent psychiatrist that specializes in working with mentally ill teenagers and is a professor of clinical psychiatry based in Chicago. He has broad interests in contemporary art and is an independent curator, collector, and has collaborated with a number of artists on various projects. His interest in art focuses primarily on the role that experience, context, ideas, and personal psychology play in the production and interpretation of art. He most recently organized a group exhibition in the Summer of 2012 involving fourteen artists working across all mediums at D'Amelio Gallery, New York. This exhibition entitled, "Idea is the Object" focused on the early philosophical writings of John Locke and examined the role that experience plays in the conception of ideas and how this functions to facilitate the production of art objects and the perception of such works. This exhibition received a number of very favorable reviews including a large review in the New York Times by Roberta Smith. The next show that he is working on is entitled, "The Atlantic Effect" and will aim to compare and contrast the role and influence that regional histories play in artistic practices within the United States and Western Europe. This exhibition is slated for 2014 and will take place in Berlin.

Die malerische Praxis von Doris Piwonka ist ein Paradebeispiel für eine Malerei, die sich den eigenen historischen wie aktuellen Bedingungen bewusst ist. Sie steht zudem für ein Weiterverfolgen eines Diskurses zur zeitgenössischen Malerei und behauptet jenes im Vertrauen auf des Mediums stets inhärenter, erneuerbarer, ästhetischer und visueller Energien. In ihrer ersten institutionellen Einzelausstellung im Künstlerhaus, Halle für Kunst & Medien (KM–) werden exemplarisch Bilder aus mehreren Werkblöcken bzw. Schaffensphasen zu sehen sein, die über ein rein formales Interesse an malerischen Angelegenheiten hinausgehen. Die Künstlerin zeigt die Malerei nicht im kennerhaften Rückzug, sondern aus ihrem kanonischen Krisendiskurs ausscherend, ihre Grenzen und Realitäten dabei subtil integrierend.

Der Grazer Bühnenautor und Dramatiker Wolfgang Bauer prägte den Begriff der Mikrodramen, die sich in ihrer Kürze und mit ihren auf der Bühne kaum umsetzbaren Regieanweisungen häufig dem Filmischen nähern, deren tatsächliche Verfilmung er aber stets ablehnte. Diese dramatische Form, die – lediglich als Text intendiert – sich ihrer Aufführbarkeit entzieht, unterwandert somit die Grenzen von Theater. Dieses Interesse an filigranen Unterwanderungen und die Arbeit mit Brüchen steht generell im Mittelpunkt der vielschichtigen, multi-medialen Re-Inszenierungen historischer Stoffe aus Film, Kunst und Theater von Kerstin Cmelka im Künstlerhaus, Halle für Kunst & Medien (KM–).

GABI SCHILLIG: THE TRUNK / BY BARBARA BERTI
Bit by bit unfolded by an improvisation of the Performer Barbara Berti and Gabi Schillig herself on the opening night of Refugium, the installation which Gabi Schillig created for the exhibition partly also reads like a retrospective, with textile objects and related videos and other documents that refer to past projects such as Raumzeitkleider, Public Receptors, and Choreographed Geometry. Each of these works also serves as a perfect metaphor for German design history: a closed system that slowly reveals its cracks, and goes bezirk. While textile objects stand central, Schillig's work encompasses a vast spectrum of experimental projects that also straddle architecture, performance and conceptual art, exploring the relationship between space and the human body, and notions such as participative strategies of space, intimate architecture, the temporary and ephemeral, and their relationship with geometry, and a 'four-dimensional concept of space'. Visitors of Refugium will not just be invited to freely touch and use Gabi's textile objects during the exhibition, but the installation will also serve as a most unusual and intimate platform for the designer conferences in A Kind of Symposium. In a kind of Symposium participating designers in the exhibition and some mystery guests will present and discuss their work, their relationship to Berlin and the importance and uniqueness of the city.
Celebrating Crisis
The way in which the celebration of new technology and the visionary dreams that came with aviation were translated into architecture still makes Tempelhof a main challenge for anyone planning an airport, almost a century after Ernst Sagebiel designed it. A continuing struggle to translate Utopia into daily life has always defined this city's history, its sudden growth – from the 17th century on- being largely due the fact that it served as a Refugium for radicals and heretics. The mix of cultures that resulted forged Berlin into a giant future lab and what a British expert already in 1906 praised as "the most modern and most perfectly organized city", while its isolated position also inspired its habitants to invent numerous strategies in order to survive – maximalizing the minimum and getting the most out of little, ad hoc and improvising.

WRITES ON HIS MOTIVATION TO ORGANIZE THE EVENT:
Politically it may not sound very correct, but I first fell in love with Berlin the moment I landed by plane on Tempelhof. It is only one reason why I am now so happy to be able to curate this Refugium (Berlin as a Design Principle) exhibition in the Tempelhof building. As so many other spots in Berlin its history perfectly summarizes the battle of ideologies and Utopias that characterized the twentieth century, from the moment it was constructed as the first and only built cornerstone of Hitler's and Speer's Germania, over the time it served as a homebase of the Luftbrücke to keep an isolated city alive as a symbol of democracy, to the recent decision to turn the airport into a giant city park after its closure, and leave it almost as it was – an open book that talks history wherever one walks.
Over the last decades this policy also lead in the design field to most peculiar experiments such as Kaufhaus des Ostens, largely ignored by Germany and the rest of the world, not just because it presented a radical departure from the German Myth of Gute Form, but also because the movement was initiated by figures such Andreas Brandolini and Jasper Morrison, who –as their name already indicates- were not considered fully German.
Over the last 15 years, I've been continuously researching and promoting this unique Berlin identity in a series of exhibitions, starting with the DIM- Die Imaginäre Manufaktur project by Vogt + Weizenegger, at the Interieur Biennale in Kortrijk in 2000. Later I also had the honor to curate what became probably the largest one-man show in design history, Jerszy Seymour's Utopian Brussels Brain at designbrussels, combined with BtoB (From Brussels to Berlin and back), an overview of the work of some 50 Berlin designers. It became the stepping stone to Nullpunkt, Nieuwe German Gestaltung, an exhibition at the MARTa Herford Museum in 2009, highlighting a new generation and the way in which these mostly Berlin-based designers, often also foreign by origin, and therefore largely ignored, developed strategies that continued the legacy of the Kaufhaus des Ostens, propagating the opposite of the ruling German philosophy, no longer taking 'the Norm as Null', but 'the Null as Norm'.
Built in a nick of time, with a zero budget, largely improvising, and co-curated with my students at d SOAP TM department of the Fachhochschule Potsdam, Refugium (Berlin as a Design Principle) is in itself an illustration of this zero-degree-philosophy, open, ad hoc and collaborative. Originally an initiative of 3NA and Mapping the Design World, a platform that researches and promotes more social oriented forms of design on a worldwide level, it grew in only a few weeks time from a plan to do a small show at a dito gallery into a large overview of what is best and latest in the Berlin design scene, continuously expanding, changing formation and locations. It came largely into being through the enthusiasm of the many designers participating, the DMY Festival that offered us two halls in Tempelhof, and especially Katrin Krupka, without whom this event would simply have been impossible. With little more ambition than offering a state of the arts of the Berlin design scene, we nevertheless hope that –with a global crisis rapidly spreading- this exhibition and platform for debate might also indicate the world needs this metropolis, that always celebrated crisis as its middle name, more than ever.
