M/L Artspace presents: 'UNDER THE OAK TREE'

M/L Artspace presents: 'UNDER THE OAK TREE' at Paramount Ranch, L.A.

Specters of Hollywood fantasia haunt the saloon, lingering illusions only to be recast as the ultimate contemporary spectacle.  Roles are assigned, costumes worn, the shooting begins. It was only a matter of time before this collision was destined, our auditions ended long ago.

Scene: A town, somewhere outside of Los Angeles, could look like the Wild West, but strangely full of people.

After the dust settles, M and L take their places amidst the remains. As if a plague has swept through the village, the dead are carried away in bags. Remnants of furniture, belongings, are strewn about the ground, perhaps from a natural disaster or more likely a quarrel. There is a faint smell of gun smoke; cigarette butts and trails of spilled liquor (or piss? Blood?) blemish the surrounding dirt. A well-dressed couple, murmuring to each other softly, approaches the shade of the oak tree, seeming anxious about their encounter but taking momentary refuge from the brutal sunshine.
(End scene, repeat)

Invitation - Old Oxen Chew Young Grass

Old Oxen Chew Young Grass

Eric Sidner & Taocheng Wang

Opening: January 25th, 7pm
Concert by Tina, 9pm

There was one man whose tailbone was rotting with gangrene, exuding an evil stench. When his suffering was at its worst, his facial expression actually seemed almost ecstatic: eyelids drooping, mouth pulled into the smile of someone who has an itch he can't quite scratch. He called out all night long, " Miss! Oh, Miss! " The syllables were drawn out, quavering, even melodic. I paid no attention. I was an irresponsible, heartless nurse. I hated him, because he was suffering terrible things. Eventually, every patient in the room was roused from sleep, and unable to ignore him, they began to call out in unison, " Miss. " I could only walk over, stand sullenly by his bed.

" What do you want? "

He thought for a while, then moaned, " Water."

All he really wanted was for someone to wait on him; the task didn't matter. I told him there was no billed water in the kitchen and walked away. He sighed, fell silent for a moment, and then began to call out again, until he couldn't manage anything but a kind of low moan: " Miss… Oh, miss… Hey, miss… "

The day the man died we were all happy enough to dance. Just as the sun began to rise, we entrusted his funeral arrangements to a professional nurse and retreated to kitchen. One of my companions used coconut oil to bake some bread that tasted a bit like Chinese fermented rice cakes. A cock was crowing over another icy white morning. Selfish people such as ourselves went nonchalantly on with living.

Installationsansichten | Nassauischer Kunstverein Wiesbaden

Installationsansichten

Vernissage - WE, tête - January 9th, 7pm

WE, tête

tête is turning two and keeps going

After two exciting years, tête acts for the first time as a group, and celebrates the end of its booster phase with an exhibition showcasing tête members only. WE, tête does not just present different artistic positions, but also mirrors what joins us: tête, both as a generous space and as a model of thinking.

tête means to be open for the new, the other, the foreign. tête doesn't consist of a closed homogeneous group but of individuals that run the project space each month independently. In place of democratic decisions there's autonomy in, and respect for the work of the individual. This concept implies that tête doesn't follow a specific goal, doesn't have a structured program nor has created a 'brand'. Our diversity is our strength. Thus, we will continue to follow our tête-approach after the collective exhibition again.

WE, tête
