HazMatLab, specimen #15,  2016

HazMatLab is a world-class science facility located underground basis Projektraum in a former Luftschutzkeller, in Frankfurt am Main in Germany. The HazMatLab, like many other underground superlabs in the world, offers an environment with constant temperature almost entirely free from cosmic-ray-particle interference, which is a permanent source of unwanted particle noise on the Earth's surface. The combination of depth and cleanliness that HazMatLab affords allows extremely rare interactions and weak processes to be studied.

Please note: due to the unique nature of our space the visit to HazMatLab is restricted, we offer guided tours of max. five guests every 15 minutes. HazMatLab does not allow cell phone use, including text messaging and photography while in the lab. Visitors are discouraged from bringing large bulky items such as bagpacks, luggage or not collapsable strollers into the lab, and we ask that all such items be checked at the entrance.

The experience of visiting HazMatLab is famously difficult to describe to others, and, at the same time, HazMatLab is best experienced by those to whom is has not been described. For this reason, we are pleased to offer our orientation plan and our guide for the specimen collection.

HazMat ist eine Ausstellungstrilogie von Sandra Havlicek, Tina Kohlmann und Katharina Schücke. In ihrem temporären unterirdischen Labor, HazMatLab, betreiben die drei Künstlerinnen chemische und alchemistische Experimente mit Materialien aus unterschiedlichen Bereichen wie z.B. Kosmetik, Raumfahrttechnik und Autotuning. Sie sind spezialisiert auf Formwandlungsprozesse. Der Ausgang dieser Experimente ist naturgemäß ungewiss. In drei Ausstellungen die für den basis Projektraum entwickelt werden präsentieren sie Aspekte ihrer Forschung.
HazMat is an exhibition trilogy by Sandra Havlicek, Tina Kohlmann and Katharina Schücke. The  artists operate out of their temporary subterranean laboratory, HazMatLab, where they work on chemical and alchemical experiments with materials from different fields like cosmetics, space technology and car tuning. The artists specialize in dismantling metamorphic processes. Naturally, the outcome of these experiments is open. In three exhibitions at basis Projektraum multiple aspects of their research are presented.
